The NPPE for APEGA candidates
The National Professional Practice Exam is required by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) before you can be licensed as a P.Eng. or P.Geo. Most APEGA candidates write it during their Member-in-Training (MIT) period, alongside the other licensing requirements, including the supervised professional experience APEGA requires.
Where the NPPE fits in your APEGA licensing journey
- Apply to APEGA and be accepted as a Member-in-Training (engineering or geoscience).
- Register for the NPPE through your APEGA member portal. The exam runs several times a year and is written online with remote proctoring.
- Pass the NPPE. The timing is up to you: APEGA lets you write it at any point in your MIT period. Many candidates choose to write early, since the exam tests ethics, law, and professional practice, none of which depend on years of work experience.
- Complete your supervised experience and competency reporting.
- Submit your final application and become a P.Eng. or P.Geo.

Is the NPPE different in Alberta?
No. The NPPE is a national exam: the questions are the same whether you write through APEGA, EGBC, or PEO. What differs is the regulator that licenses you afterwards. You will not be tested on Alberta-only legislation, but understanding how the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act applies to your daily practice makes the Regulation topic much easier to retain.
