The NPPE for EGBC candidates
The National Professional Practice Exam is required by Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) before you can be licensed as a P.Eng. or P.Geo. Most EGBC candidates write it while working through the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Geoscientist-in-Training (GIT) programs.
BC is different: the Professional Governance Act
Unlike Alberta and Ontario, where engineering has its own statute, BC regulates engineering and geoscience under the Professional Governance Act, a framework that took effect in 2021 and covers several regulated professions. The PGA brought a sharper focus on ethics, continuing education, and professional accountability, which happens to be exactly the territory the NPPE tests hardest. The exam itself is national, so you will not be quizzed on BC-only legislation, but EGBC candidates who understand how the PGA frames their duties find the Professionalism and Regulation topics far more intuitive.
Where the NPPE fits in your EGBC licensing journey
- Apply to EGBC and register as an EIT or GIT.
- Register for the NPPE through EGBC. The exam runs several times a year, online with remote proctoring.
- Pass the NPPE. You decide when to write it; early in your training period is a good time, since the content does not depend on accumulated work experience.
- Complete EGBC's other licensing requirements, including the qualifying professional experience it sets out, with competency reporting along the way.
- Final application, and your P.Eng. or P.Geo. licence.
