NPPE exam schedule

The National Professional Practice Exam runs five times a year. Each sitting lasts three days, and you write on one of those days at a time you book yourself. The dates are the same for every regulator that uses the NPPE.

Applying in Quebec? The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec runs its own professional exam and does not use the NPPE, so check with the OIQ directly.

How NPPE registration works

You register through your own engineering or geoscience regulator, not through the exam provider. Every sitting follows the same four steps.

  1. Before anything else
    Get approved by your regulator
    Most candidates need an open application or EIT/GIT status before they can register.
  2. 6 to 7 weeks before
    Register by the deadline
    Miss the deadline and you move to the next sitting, usually two to three months later.
  3. About 2 weeks later
    Book your day and time
    A booking window opens after registration closes. In 2026 each window opened two weeks after the deadline and stayed open for just over two weeks. Earlier bookings get the widest choice.
  4. Exam days
    Write the exam
    110 multiple-choice questions, closed book, in 2.5 hours, on the day you booked.

Which sitting should you choose?

Pick the sitting that gives you steady preparation time, not the earliest one you can squeeze into.

Count back from the deadline

Plan around the registration deadline, not the exam day. Your decision point comes about six weeks before you write.

You do not need to wait

The exam tests ethics, law, and professional practice, not technical engineering. Work experience helps less than most candidates expect.

A missed sitting costs months

If a deadline is close and you have not started, registering for the following sitting and preparing properly is usually the better call.

The next sitting is November 2 to 4, 2026, and registration for it closed on September 18, 2026. The next sitting still open for registration is January 11 to 13, 2027, with a registration deadline of November 27, 2026.
